Description: This talk will focus on the future of educational consortiums and the forces that are at play in shaping the future of these organizations. Starting with the assertion that “Openness” is the harbinger of how educational consortia will be redefined; Mr. Grant will look at what openness has wrought, including communities, collaboration and group-think and offer examples of each. The talk will then turn to the possibilities to harness and employ these trends in creating new and meaningful services for consortia members. Challenging traditional thinking at every turn, Mr. Grant will then ask the panelists to react to the ideas offered as well as to offer their own thoughts.

Collaborative Network Behavior: Leading “Leaderfully” in the University Consortia and Centers
Presenter: Dr. Joe Raelin, Author of Creating Leaderful Organizations and Worked-Based Learning
Moderator: Mr. Phil DiChiara, Managing Director, The Boston Consortium for Higher Education
Description: In this workshop, Dr. Raelin will first explain his model of work-based learning and its relationship to a form of collaborative leadership, which he refers to as “leaderful practice.” Then, he will demonstrate how these approaches are exemplified through a network leadership program, called the Susan Vogt Fellowship Program, sponsored by the Boston Consortium for Higher Education. Leaderful change, to occur systemically, should be conducted at multiple levels of experience, such as at the individual and team levels. In this workshop, he will focus on leaderful development at the network level, however, to explicitly illustrate how one can take advantage of weaver responsibilities and tools to build social capital within a consortia or center.

The Evolving Consortial Model: How Claremont University Consortium is Redefining itself to Meet the Changing Environment

Description: After nearly a century of collaboration experiences, the Claremont University Consortium is confronting the issues pushing back at all collaboration efforts… What specifically are the added values we represent? What are the new service offerings on the horizon? Are we an academic institution or a service company? Should we seek to remain ‘not for profit’ or convert to a private, for-profit company? How do all of these things impact the employee culture and how are we evolving to a modern management style?
This presentation will provide a baseline of history, and then quickly refocus on the evolving fiscal organizational, and service challenges necessary to remain viable and meet the increasing needs and fiscal constraints of highly selective colleges.

Why Waste a Good Crisis
Discussion Leader: Mr. Bob Walton, Chief Executive Officer, Claremont University Center
Description: As colleges, universities and centers react to the uncertain fiscal environment, consortia are seeking to find both opportunities as well as facing challenges. This discussion will be a practical and candid exchange of some of the serious impacts to and reaction of consortia leaders participating at the conference, including specific techniques organizations are using to reduce costs, and whether there are creative and/or new opportunistic programs that are being born in the fiscal confusion.
Moderator: Dr. Larry Dotolo, Executive Director of the Association for Consortium Leadership, (ACL)
Description: Consortia, whether geographic or affinity based, can derive real benefits from pooling faculty and staff recruiting activities. This lively session will outline a "co-opetition" model for structuring aggregated job databases for effective recruiting (and as a powerful draw to your consortium Web site); addressing the dual career couple issue; leveraging group purchasing power for recruiting-related spending; and creating a terrific candidate experience for job applicants at all member institutions.
